Doris Hodges Stocks, 80, a resident of Rosedale, Washington, N.C., passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at her home. There will be a celebration of her life at 10 a.m., Monday, June 30, 2014, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service, officiated by Pastor Jay Martin. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Jonathan Eubanks, Bradford Luchenbill, Stuart Eubanks, Hatteras Brooks, Gene Paul Edwards and Elwood Ingalls will serve as pallbearers.
Doris was born May 13, 1934 in Pitt County, daughter of the late Clarence and Ruby Boyd Hodges. She married her childhood boyfriend, William Gardner Stocks Sr. on Nov. 1, 1952, who preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 2002. She was a devoted and loving wife of fifty years. She retired from National Spinning Co. with more than 43 years of service. Doris was a strong woman who survived and conquered many of life's hardships. Her work ethic provided the means to raise five children during tough times. This lesson enabled Doris, to have more than enough savings, to pay for her care and comfort during her sickness these past two years.
Doris loved the Lord and this was very evident in the way she lived her life. She was a long time member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Washington. She served her church over the years as a Secretary, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Officer and a member of the Women's Auxiliary. She served God in her personal life by reaching out to others. She routinely visited and gifted flowers to shut-ins and nursing home patients. She was an example of how to believe in God through all circumstances. He was her Rock, her Savior, and her Friend.
She is survived by her four daughters, Peggy Waters of Durham, Sue Simmons and husband, Eric, of Carrboro, Denise Eubanks and husband, Marvin, of Washington and Billie Carol Brooks and husband, Bo, of Washington; son, Billy Stocks and wife, Paige, of Grimesland; five sisters, Joyce Warren, Janice Mosley, Faye Stainback, Jean Avery and Jane Avery; brothers, Jesse Hodges, Jimmy Hodges, and Bobby Hodges; nine grandchildren, Stacy Erickson and husband, Andrew, Jonathan Eubanks and wife, Paula, Charlotte Reedy and husband, Ted, Bradford Luchenbill, Stuart Eubanks, Amy Lilly and husband, Alex, Hatteras Brooks, Emeline Stocks and Will Stocks; and three great-grandchildren, Levi Eubanks, Morgan Stringer and Blake Erickson.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James Hodges and Grady Hodges; son-in-law, Marvin Waters; and great-grandchild, Rylen Elizabeth Eubanks.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Hwy 264 E., Washington, and other times at the home of her daughter, Denise Eubanks, 409 Northwood Rd., Smallwood, Washington.
