TRUSSVILLE, ALA. - Cathy Whitehurst Ellis, 61, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014, at her home from complications due to Type I Diabetes. A service will be conducted at Hickory Grove Free Will Baptist Church on Friday at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the Bethel Cemetery, N.C.
"Cathy Sue," as she was affectionately known to family and local friends, was a native of the Whitehurst Station community of Pitt County, N.C. She was a 1970 graduate of Bethel High School, received a BA degree in Education from East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. and a Masters in School Counseling from West Georgia University, Carrollton, Ga.
Cathy lived and taught school in Carrollton, Ga. and Pinson, prior to making her home in Trussville. She worked in education for 37 years, 27 of those years in Jefferson County. She had been serving as a guidance counselor at Clay-Chalkville Middle School, since its opening in 1996.
Cathy was preceded in death by her father, Joe Whitehurst.
She is survived by her mother, Shirley Stevenson Whitehurst, formerly of Whitehurst Station, now of Greenville, N.C.; brothers, Joey Whitehurst and wife, Corinne, of Whitehurst Station, Steve Whitehurst and wife, Jennie, of Greenville, N.C.; a nephew, Justin Whitehurst; and nieces, Jenna W. Aldridge and husband, Heber and Keri Whitehurst.
Cathy met and left behind many dear friends during her time in Alabama. Cathy shared her spirit of peace and grace with those who knew and loved her. As a dedicated educator, Cathy cared deeply for the students she came in contact with and positively influenced many during her years as a teacher and counselor. Cathy's cheerful smile and crazy laugh will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at in memory of Cathy Ellis or to Hickory Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 5547 NC Hwy 30, Robersonville, NC 27871.
Additionally, a celebration of life service for Cathy is planned for Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Northpark Baptist Church, 5700 Deerfoot Pkwy, Trussville, AL 35173.
