SNOW HILL - Mary Margaret Whitfield Smith, born Nov. 3, 1943, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014. As a mother, grandmother, foster mother, dancer, artist, teacher, paramedic, published author, mentor and friend were just some of the ways in which she touched the lives of anyone she knew. She was vibrant and full of life and now is rejoicing with the heavenly Father. She would not want us to be sad, so we honor her life not by being consumed with her death but empowered by her vivacious spirit.
Her legacy is carried on in earth by her children, Johnathan Hughes and wife Kristin of Winterville, Jeremy Hughes of Manteo, Catherine Smith of Winterville and Woody Fowler and wife Cheryl of McDonough, Ga.; and her grandchildren, Krystyne Harris and husband Brad, Tyler Hughes, Nathan Hughes, Ethan Hughes, Kaytyn Hughes, Charlie Hughes, Nicholas Hughes, Jacob Hughes, Chelsea Long, Dylan Long, Eli Fowler and Joe Fowler.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sugg Family Cemetery on Dobbs Street in Snow Hill. In accordance with the light she shined in the world, please dress in colorful attire as black was not her favorite color. The family will receive friends immediately following at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Life World Outreach Center, 106 Hull Road, Snow Hill, NC 28580. Online condolences may be made at
