Mr. Robert Edward King, 68, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Bob, Bobby to friends and family, was born in Newport News, Va. and raised in Hampton, Va., graduated from Hampton High School, then attended William & Mary College. In 1964 he married his high school sweetheart Jeanette Ferguson. In 1971, they moved to Greenville where he worked as a medical sales representative before founding Consolidated Medical Supply, the company that he owned and operated. Following an early retirement, he worked for Greenville Pathology where he worked for the past 14 years.
Bob was known for his great love of life, good food, travel and adventure. He and wife Jeanette would literally plan trips around top restaurants in various cities, and once had the luck to have a meal personally cooked - at the only table in an empty restaurant - by a young Mario Batali, in one of Batali's first establishments in New York City. After his daughters would move to a city, he would be ready with a full list of restaurants that he was anxious for them to try in order to get a first-hand review. Much loved for his warm and sociable personality, Bob loved nothing more than to draw others into conversation and had a knack for making friends of perfect strangers wherever he might find himself.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Jeanette King; daughters, Kelley King and husband, Robert Fritz, of Los Angeles and Jennifer King and husband, Matthew Welsh, of New Rochelle, N.Y.; grandchildren, Juliana Fritz and Sterling, Caroline and Charles Welsh; brothers, Dr. Miles Henry King III and wife, Deborah, of Bethesda, Md. and Dr. Joseph King and wife, Linda, of Radford, Va.; and sister, Sara King Pinkston and husband, David, of Battle Creek, Mich.
