ELON â€" Fred Cargile passed away on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 at 1:30 a.m. in Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance County.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Fred was born in Weldon, NC and was the son of George M. and Mary P. Cargile. He grew up in Parmele, NC and graduated from high school in Robersonville, N.C.
He spent his entire working career in the railroad industry; beginning with Atlantic Coastline as a telegraph operator and finishing with CSX Corporation 46 years later as a customer service agent. Most of his adult life was spent in Greenville, N.C., where he was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. In 2006, he moved to Elon, N.C., along with his wife, Colleen J. Cargile, who survives. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Elon.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his two brothers, Murray and Winston Cargile; grandsons, Jason and Jonathan Cargile; and stepdaughter, Maryanne Patton Mills.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Jeff Cargile and wife, Sandy, Lynn Matheron, Kim Koesy and husband, Mike, and Jill Newman; stepson, Kelly Patton and wife, Joyce; eight grandchildren, Catherine, Alize and Tania Matheron, Katy and Lauren Koesy, Marshall and wife, Jenna, Olivia and Trevor Newman; sister, Jean Weathington; and three nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been requested to the First United Methodist Church of Elon, P.O. Box 923 Elon, NC 27244 or to St. James United Methodist Church, 2000 E. Sixth St., Greenville, NC 27858.
