Mr. John E. Montgomery, 88, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Montgomery, a native of Shreveport, La., spent his youth in Baton Rouge. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After World War II, he was a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he participated in track and field and was an outstanding pole-vaulter. He had been a resident of Greenville for many years, and was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, and had participated in the senior games. He served as a Lay Minister with the Pitt County Detention Center and had volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marylie Williams Montgomery in 2002; and a brother, Robert Montgomery.
He is survived by his second wife, Barbara Winn Montgomery, of Raleigh; and a number of special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home tonight from 6 – 8. Memorial contributions may be made to Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, 510 South Washington St., Greenville, NC 27834.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Carolina House and at Pitt County Memorial Hospital for their care during Mr. Montgomery illness.
