William M. Smith Jr. William McKinley Smith Jr., 90, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 14, 2010, surrounded by his family members. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Conner officiating. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. He was a native of Asheville in Buncombe County, and the son of late William McKinley Smith Sr. and Molly Moleta Buckner Smith. Bill, or "Willie" as known to his close friends, resided for 51 years in Greenville. He moved to Greenville from New Bern, after leaving the mountains many years ago to find work to support his family. Bill worked for many years as a construction superintendent with P.S. West Construction Company, from Statesville, in Eastern North Carolina. His pride and the quality of the work in the buildings he helped to erect are legendary in both New Bern and Greenville. Many public schools, and other jobs he supervised, stand as testimonials to the craftsmanship he brought to his work. As a lifetime Christian, he applied his many skills to the Lord's work as he helped others through home repairs to those in need and homebuilding through Habitat for Humanity. In his later years, he worked as a locksmith. He also loved to garden, producing delicious food for his family and friends. He was a beloved and respected Father and family man to his immediate and extended family, and will be greatly missed by his friends. He met regularly with some of them at the Coffee Club of Greenville, and greatly enjoyed their fun and fellowship together. Bill and Rubena are members of the Immanuel Baptist Church where Bill was a member of the Men's Bible Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Bill and Rubena recently celebrated their 69th Wedding Anniversary with family in Greenville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Edward Smith, and surviving wife, Martha, of Asheville, as well as a sister, Doris Lillian Winston, also of Asheville. He is survived by his wife, Rubena Elizabeth Bailey Smith, 90, of Greenville; sons, Richard Wayne Smith and wife, Libby Bailey, of, Greensboro, and Douglas Eugene Smith, of Greenville; daughter, Wanda Elaine Smith Caldwell and husband, Robert, of Clyde; granddaughters, Tamera Lynne Caldwell, of Traveler's Nest, S.C., and Bailey Katherine Thirloway, of Bend, Ore.; brothers, Charles Edwin Smith and wife, Shirley, Lewis Walter Smith, all of Asheville, and George Kenneth Smith and wife, Margaret, of Columbia, S.C. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Online condolences at www.wilkersonfuneralhome.com.
