Fred L. Brooks Jr., 61, passed away Nov. 20, 2010, surrounded by family and friends. A private gathering of family and close friends was held in his home immediately following his death.

Originally from Shelby,he came to Greenville to study art at East Carolina University, where he earned a BFA and MFA in painting. His work career included specialty house painting (including murals), color matching in the screen printing industry, and driving for Car Quest. The main focus of his career was producing paintings which have been shown locally and regionally, and won numerous awards. His hobbies included making and selling model cars, and painting miniature soldiers.
Fred is survived by his wife, Annette Williams Brooks, an artist and art teacher; his son, Aaron Brooks a composer and musician; and his sister, Loretta Suttles, an organist and vocalist.
A celebration of his life and career will be held in the spring. An exhibition of his and his wife's art will be on display in January at the Greene County Cultural Arts Center.
