Martha Alice Meloy Tennent was born Feb. 10, 1918, in Washington, Pa. and died peacefully Monday, August 15, 2011 in Greenville. A memorial service will be held at the Cypress Glen Continuing Care Retirement Community at 7:30 p.m. on October 3, 2011 and later in Ashland, Ohio.

The fourth of seven children of Robert H. and Alice Lambie Meloy, she graduated from the College of Wooster in 1939 receiving a B.A. in Chemistry and from Pennsylvania State University (1941) with an MS in bacteriology. In 1942 she worked in Oxford England at the American Hospital. She joined the Merck Institute in 1943 where she worked for three years prior to her marriage to David M. Tennent. She and her husband were avid travelers visiting all seven continents, including one year (their "Polar Year") when they visited both the Arctic and the Antarctic.
Martha will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving mother and friend, a wonderful cook and gifted seamstress.
She is survived by her four children, Blythe Tennent of Greenville, Meredith Tennent of San Francisco, David Tennent of Corning, N.Y., and Charles Tennent of Brecksville, Ohio; her five grandchildren, Andrew Nicholson, Guy Nicholson, Geoff Tennent, Jana Tennent and Lindsey Tennent; and her great grandson Maxwell Nicholson. She is also survived by her sister, Isabel Gehr of Lancaster, Pa.
