AYDEN - Thomas Dudley "Tommy" Burney, 68, died Monday, April 30, 2012, at his home.

He was born on August 24, 1943 in Pitt County to Claude and Verna Burney. Tommy grew up in the Grifton area and was a member of Elm Grove Free Will Baptist Church. He was a former Chief of Police in Ayden for over 14 years and an original founder of the Ayden Auxiliary Police, which started in 1971 with approximately a dozen officers. Tommy served with the Pitt County Sheriff Department retiring with 21 years of law enforcement service. He was president and general manager of NAPA of Ayden for 21 years. He is survived by his wife, Montez Tatum Burney of the home; his mother, Verna Dudley Burney of Greenville; son, Thomas D. Burney II and wife, Amy, of Ayden; two daughters, Mary Ellen Burney of the home, and Rebecca Burney Vanover and husband, John of Dupo, Ill.; brother, Billy Burney of Hampton, Va.; sister, Pat Tripp and husband, Burt, of Ayden; niece, Susan Tripp of Ayden; nephew, Tony Tripp of Ayden; six grandchildren, Beau Vanover, Sara Vanover, Jacob Jones, Jordan Jones, Alston Burney, and Amber Tuggle, and many special friends.
A memorial service will be held Thursday evening at 7 at Elm Grove F.W.B. Church, officiated by Dr. Franklin Baggett and the Rev. Charles Branch. The family will receive friends Thursday evening following the service in the Family Life Center.
