SNOW HILL - Mr. Alonzo Clay Edwards Jr., 69, died suddenly on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at the "cabin" on his farm near Hookerton.

The only child of Alonzo Clay Edwards and Bettie Hardy Taylor, he was born Sept. 28, 1943.
Alonzo attended Hookerton School, Oak Ridge Military Institute and North Carolina State College (North Carolina State University). His interest in Boy Scouting began in his childhood and, as an adult, he was the Explorer Post Advisor of Post 310 in Hookerton. Additionally, he served on the East Carolina Council of Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award. An avid sportsman and nature conservationist, Alonzo enjoyed his "cabin" and the rural setting it provided and was often there.
Alonzo was very active in sportsmen's and conservation associations and had also served on the Board of Directors of Wachovia Bank in Snow Hill, known today as Wells Fargo.
A proud and loving husband, father and grandfather, he leaves to cherish his memory a wife of 48 years, Sarah Exum Edwards; daughter, Sarah "Sallie" Hodges Edwards of Charlotte; son, Alonzo Clay "Lon" Edwards III of Wilmington; and grandsons, William Mason Mayeux and Robert Clay Mayeux, both of Charlotte.
Graveside Services will be held 4 p.m. today at the Rainbow Cemetery with the Rev. Martin Armstrong officiating. The family invites friends and extended family to join them following the service for a time of fellowship and remembering at the cabin, 728 Ormondsville Road, Hookerton.
