Mrs. Melba Brown Howard Stallings, 85, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

Mrs. Stallings, a native of Pitt County, attended Bethel Schools and was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College. She made her home in Greenville in 1951, and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, where she served as past Chairman of the Board and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Delphine Book Club and the Dig and Delve Garden Club. Mrs. Stallings also served as past president of Wahl-Coates PTA and the Pitt County Mental Health Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Stallings; a brother, William Darcy Brown; and a sister, Elizabeth Briley.
She is survived by her son, John LeRoy Howard Jr.; daughter, Hannah Howard DeSoto and husband, Bob, all of Greenville; stepchildren, Richard E. Stallings, Charles E. Stallings and Elizabeth S. May; grandchildren, Jake and Brian DeSoto, Graham and Austin Stallings, Heather Sebahar, Janeice Jones, Allie, Reade and Hayden Putnam; and sister, Bertha Pauline Cumming, of Atlanta.
