Born in Henderson on Dec. 3, 1942, Fran was the only child of the late Mary Frances Wilson McGhee of Henderson and Thomas Joyner McGhee of Franklinton. She grew up in Franklinton and graduated from Franklinton High School in 1960. She was born with a love of music and attended Greensboro Women's College where she majored in voice.
Fran worked at Eastern Dermatology in Greenville from 1975 until the early 1990's where she worked her way up from word processing to office manager. After leaving Eastern Dermatology, she worked as an IT analyst with East Carolina Health and Vidant. A life-long learner, Fran continued to work as a consultant in medical billing to health clinics in eastern North Carolina after retiring.
Fran deeply loved and was loved by her four grandchildren who called her Frannie. She spent much time with them in Cary and enjoyed taking them to plays, musical events, and dinner.
Fran loved life and loved to travel and experience new places and people. During the last ten years of her life, she took multiple trips to Europe and visited England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Greece, France, and Spain. Her last trip was to Italy with her daughter and two oldest grandchildren. She was looking forward to a cruise in December where she would snorkel during the day and listen to chamber music at night.
An active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville, Fran had served on St. Paul's vestry and was a member of the choir. One of her favorite recent memories was touring and singing at cathedrals in England with St. Paul's Choir.
She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Cherry McRae and husband, Stuart Ray; and four grandchildren, Celia Frances, William Stuart, Katherine Grace, and Elizabeth Glynn, all of Cary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival at East Carolina University, 102 A. J. Fletcher Music Center, Greenville, NC 27858.
