Mr. Bernice Alton Allen, 93, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Allen was born in Pitt County, the son of farmers Willis and Blanche Allen. He was a graduate of Bell Arthur High School, after which he entered the United States Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre and North Africa. Following his military service, he returned home and began courting the love of his life, Jean Toler Johnson. They married on Feb. 4, 1951.
Mr. Allen was an expert painter in construction, working with A.B. Whitley Co. for 23 years, earning the honor of master painter. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church, enjoyed tending his garden and sharing his vegetables. He was a sweet and gentle man who cherished his family.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his brothers, Mack Allen and Wesley Allen; and a sister, Erline Coward.
Left to cherish his memory are: his wife of 63 years, Jean Johnson Allen, of Ballards Crossroads; sons, Bernice Allen Jr. and wife, Diane, of Fuquay-Varina, Fred Allen and wife, Anne Jeanne, of Jason, Ivey Allen of Ballards Crossroads and Doug Allen of Greenville; daughter, Emily Smith and husband, Jerry, of Ballards Crossroads; grandchildren, Evan, Tristan, Virginia, Sarah, Elliot, Cameron, Charles, Brandon, Amber, Cherish, Megan and Israel; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Ralph Allen and wife, Viola, of Bell Arthur and Herman Allen of Greenville; sisters, Shyla Todd of Cary and Becky Covington of Winterville.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
