Eugene "Gene" Carpenter passed away from natural causes on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at the age of 87. Gene, affectionately referred to by his children as "Pop" is survived by his son and daughter-in-law David and Karen Carpenter of Greenville, son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sheri Carpenter of Columbia, S.C., and son, George Sawyer of Elizabeth City. He is also survived by his adopted family, Jackie and Carolyn Griffin of Greenville.
He was born in Chicago and lived most of his life in Mont Alto, Pa. He fondly lived the last four years in Greenville at Cypress Glen Retirement Community. He served his country in the Navy during WWII and had a long career working with the federal government in communications. He always lived life to the fullest and was thrilled when his job offered him the opportunity to live and work in both Europe and Korea for extended periods. He enjoyed his post retirement "second" career as an elementary school crossing guard where he required each child to give him a "high five" before they could pass by him. His favorite thing in life, which he was good at, was to make people smile. He truly enjoyed the company of his many Cypress Glen friends. His family would like to express their appreciation to those who helped care for him and to all of the extended Cypress Glen family who were so good to him.
A memorial service will be held at Cypress Glen Retirement Community on Friday March 7, 2014, at 2 p.m.
