James 'Jim' Davis Mellon

WINTERVILLE - James "Jim" Davis Mellon, 91, died peacefully on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at the Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro, NC.

Due to inclement weather, a memorial service will be held at Winterville Christian Church, at a later date.

Jim was born July 4th, 1927 to Margaret Worthington and James Davis Mellon in Charlotte, NC. He grew up on the Worthington tobacco farm in Winterville, NC. After graduating from Winterville High School, Jim enrolled in NC State University for a short while before enlisting in the Air Force for the final phase of WWII hostilities. Upon his discharge, he attended East Carolina University, at the time named East Carolina Teachers College, to complete his undergraduate degree and obtain a teaching certificate.

Jim then entered the Air Force Reserves and served in both this capacity and several civilian positions for many years, including his first teaching position at the Morehead City School in Morehead City, NC. In the summers he operated a hamburger and ice cream shop in Atlantic Beach. During this time on the coast, he met and married Jane Turner Stroud of Morehead City. After their wedding the couple moved to Chapel Hill, NC where Jim attended UNC-Chapel Hill to obtain a graduate degree in biology as a recipient of a National Science Foundation scholarship. Upon graduating, Jim and Jane moved to Florida to teach in the public-school system.

In 1962 Jim re-enlisted for active duty in the Air Force. After his re-enlistment, he and Jane travelled the world together for his communications-related assignments. They especially enjoyed their time in Okinawa, Japan and Madrid, Spain. Jim retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel with 26 years of service in 1974, whereupon he and his family returned to his beloved family farm in Winterville.

In Winterville Jim crop-farmed and raised Black Angus cows while working first as a high school teacher at Greene Central High School in Snow Hill, NC and then as a community college teacher at Nash Technical College in Rocky Mount. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and the Winterville Christian Church. He also enjoyed many hobbies such as bee-keeping, chair-caning and gardening. He maintained the farm's pecan grove as well; distributing many pounds of pecans to family and friends over the years. He and Jane made a loving home for dozens of homeless and rescued dogs during their 40 some years at the farm.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jane Stroud Mellon, his mother Margaret Worthington Mellon, father James Davis Mellon Sr, brother Philip Worthington Mellon, sister Margaret Ann Harris Nemtuda and nephew, Philip Worthington Mellon, Jr.

He is survived by his daughters; Jane Anne Mellon Bofenkamp and husband Brad of Wake Forest NC, and Mary Finch Mellon of Winterville NC and granddaughter, Eva Jane Bofenkamp. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
