TORRINGTON >> Mitchell John White passed away on July 10, 2013 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Mitchell was born on June 27, 1958 in Torrington, Connecticut, the son of Jack and Gerri White. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan (Koplar) of 24 years; his two sons, Matthew and Kevin; his mother Gerri; sister Christine and her husband, Louis; and many nieces and nephews.
Mitchell earned his BS degree from Keene State College, New Hampshire and earned his MS degree from Central Connecticut State University.
He taught technology at Torrington High School for four years and then became an itinerant teacher for the State Department of Education's Plastics on Wheels program. He completed his career with twenty years at the Connecticut Vocational-Technical High School as an Information Technology Department Head and Technology Instructor.
Prior to beginning his teaching career in 1980, he also worked as an architect for Country Log Homes. During his career, he wrote and published three technology books. In 1987, he received the Technology Teacher of the Year award from the Connecticut Technology Teacher Association, the New England Technology Teacher Association, and the International Technology Teacher Association. He continued teaching for 32 years until beginning his battle with cancer.
Mitchell loved music and live concerts. He enjoyed attending the Live Aid show in Philadelphia in 1985. Mitch lived the outdoor life; camping, swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, geocaching, biking, and being with family and friends.
In his youth, Mitchell was a competitive swimmer earning State and New England first place trophies as a freestyle sprinter. He won All- American Honors as a senior in high school in 1972. He also coached the Torrington YMCA Swim Team from 1980-1982, and traveled with several swimmers to the Nationals Championship Meet in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Mitchell was a lifelong member of the ELKS and many other fraternities including the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Society of Plastics Engineers, American Woodcarvers Association, National Education Association, and the American Federation of Teachers. He was active with Torrington Boy Scouts, Troop 4.
The White family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of Yale New Haven Cancer Center and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 15, at 8 a.m. from Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect Street, Torrington, to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 160 Main Street, Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Sunday, July 14, 2013, from 6 TO 8 p.m.
