John Boratko Obituary

TORRINGTON >> John Boratko, Jr, beloved husband of Mildred (Wallek) Boratko of 80 Sunset Lane, Torrington, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, after a brief illness.
He was born on May 23, 1923, the son of John and Anna (Evanides) Boratko. He was a lifelong resident of Torrington, attending public schools and graduating from Torrington High School. John was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division in the European theatre during World War II, serving with the 326th Glider Infantry, reaching the rank of Tech Sargeant.
He was a toolmaker by trade, working in a number of local factories, including Hendies, the Torrington Company, Torin Corporation, Hamilton Standard, and Jamieson Manufacturing Company. He retired in 1985.
He was also known in the Torrington area as an accomplished accordionist, playing for parties and dances in the late 1930's through the 1950's. In his later life, he continued his love for music by singing with St. Paul's Lutheran Church choir for a number of years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter Jane, wife of Otto Sabatelli of Torrington; a son James and his wife Kathi of Canton; and grandchildren Nancy Sabatelli of Torrington, Michael Boratko and his wife Angela of Windsor, Jeffrey and Keith Boratko of Canton, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Thursday, July 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Phalen Funeral Home, Migeon Avenue, Torrington. A graveside committal service will be held Friday, July 19 at 11 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery, Torrington. A memorial service will be celebrated Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Torrington.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Friends of Music Fund at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, or the charity of the donor's choice. http://www.phalenfuneral.com/

My father served with John Boratko in the army during WWII. He always spoke fondly of him and said he was a brave guy! They were good friends during the war.
