TORRINGTON - Dante J. Longobucco, 90, of Eastlawn Drive, Torrington, died June 24, 2012, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital peacefully and surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Shirley (Northrup) Longobucco for 62 years.
Dante was born on Jan. 16, 1922, in Torrington, the son of Domenic and Lena (Alaimo) Longobucco. He was the co-owner/operator of the Burrville Food and Fuel Center, and later employed by Price Chopper until his retirement. A graduate of the Torrington High School Class of 1941, he served his country with the US Army during World War II. Among the awards and decorations he received upon his honorable discharge in April of 1946 were the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Army of Occupation Medal of Germany and the Victory Medal. He attended Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia and Morse College in Hartford. He was a lifetime member of the Elk's Lodge #372, a member of the American Legion, a longtime member of the Burrville Volunteer Fire Department and was inducted into the THS Hall of Fame in 2000. He was a member of Center Congregational Church for over 60 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Linda Smedick, her husband John of Torrington and their children Sean Smedick, Melyssa White and her husband Allyn of North Caanan and their children Emily and Abigail White; Susan Hynes and her husband John of Kennebunk, Maine and their children Victoria and Christopher Hynes; Denise Bierce and her husband William of Willington, and their daughter Codi Bierce, Lori Ross and her husband Robert of Torrington and their children Myles and Hailey Ross, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Solywoda.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington. The cortege will depart at 10:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington to Center Congregational Church, 155 Main St., Torrington for funeral services at 11 a.m. Burial will immediately follow in Hillside Cemetery with full military honors.
