Barkhamsted >> Dorothy Ann Ducharme Lavieri of Barkhamsted died Wednesday, February 6, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, in the warmth of the family she loved so much. Dorothy, `Dot`, was the widow of Carmine R. Lavieri, who died in 1984.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born February 28, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Helen Beames Ducharme. Dot grew up in Pittsburgh and West Hartford, and graduated from Hall High School in West Hartford. She later enthusiastically studied accounting at Northwestern Connecticut Community College.
She and Carmine were married in the Trinity College Chapel August 7, 1943. She joined Carmine in New Orleans, while he served in the Army for the duration of World War II. They returned to Connecticut in the winter of 1946, and settled in Barkhamsted, where they lived the rest of their lives.
She worked at the Phoenix Mutual Insurance Company after high school, and later at the Barkhamsted School, and as a Manager of the North Road Toy Store. After raising her family, she worked 20 years as an accountant at Sterling Engineering. She served as a director of the Greenwoods Scholarship Foundation, and a trustee of the Northwest Community Bank.
Active in the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church her whole life, Dot sang in the choir, and served as Financial Secretary for many years. As a young wife and mother, she was active in a Pleasant Valley amateur theater group, and a group of knitters called The Knitwits. She loved bird watching and trout fishing, and spent many satisfying hours hoping for fish to bite in Morgan Brook and West Hill Lake.
Most of all, Dot loved her family. Even as she aged, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and growing legacy of great-grandchildren, both at home, on family visits, and on family vacation trips to Maine, California, Florida, and wherever she was able. At the age of 85, she found her way onto Facebook so that she could communicate more easily with her grandchildren and extended family. To the end, she was sharing her common sense, and her love of humor with us all.
She leaves her six children: Jeanne Lavieri of La Crescenta, CA, Mary Liz Simons and her husband Chip of Barkhamsted, Richard R. Lavieri of Winsted, Roberta Leffingwell and her husband John of Torrington, Patricia Minton and her husband Will of Barkhamsted; and John Nelson Lavieri and his wife Corky, also of Barkhamsted. Her daughter-in-law and sons-in-law grew to love her as their own. Nineteen grandchildren loved her more than words can say: Benjamin Smith, Jackson Smith, Amy Simons Witmer and husband Mike, Gregory Simons, Michael Lavieri, Anna Lavieri, Carmine Lavieri and wife Maureen, Adam Moore and wife Heather, Jay Moore, Peter Minton and wife Greta, Maresi Minton Brown and husband Timon, Katherine Minton Tackett and husband Phil, Holly Lavieri Schmidt and husband Michael, Sara Lavieri Hunter and husband Derek, Suzanne Gundersen and husband Smudge, Todd Lavieri and wife Suzie, Frank Lavieri and wife Mary, Lisa Lavieri and husband Charlie Smith, and Robert Lavieri and wife Kathy. She was pre-deceased by her grandson Gregory R. Simons. Twenty-six great-grandchildren called her Gram-Gram, forming warm, loving bonds with this giving soul.
One of seven girls, she also leaves three sisters, Nanette Lavieri of Barkhamsted, Blanche Deasy of Ambler, PA, and Katherine Doyle of West Hartford. She was pre-deceased by sisters, Jeanne Ducharme, Mary Ellen Wood Holt, and Shirley Deasy. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, and her large extended family.
Our family is grateful beyond measure for the generous outpouring of love, care, affection, and prayers for family, friends, and health care givers in recent months. We welcome you to join us in a memorial service celebrating Dorothy Ann`s life Sunday, February 10, at 2:00 PM, at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.
