Harriet Ruwet Nov. 10, 1922 - Aug. 6, 2012 TORRINGTON - Harriett Goodwin Ruwet of Torrington died of natural causes Aug. 6, 2012 at her home of 61 years. She was born in Avon, Nov. 10, 1922 to her parents Aden Hubbard Goodwin and Daisy Twining Goodwin. As a young girl, her family moved to the Torringford section of Torrington. She met her future husband, George, through his sisters, her friends, and spent many fun nights together at the local Grange dances. The couple attended Harriett's junior prom together, though George was yet a freshman. Harriett graduated from Torrington High School in 1940 and went to work as a secretary at Union Hardware, where she was employed until she married. She assisted in the WWII war effort as a plane spotter at the George Carey airfield in Torringford, spending many evenings along with George looking for and calling in their "spots." Harriett became an accomplished seamstress and used those skills to lead 4-H clubs for 25 years. She taught and encouraged many young girls, including her own, during her years as leader of the Snappy Snippers and Torrington Thimbles. She was an accomplished baker, pies and cookies were her specialties. Her visits brought anticipation of the goodies inside her iconic Pringles cans. Known to all as "Grandma," Harriett was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She spent countless hours attending activities in which her family participated. Whether a sporting event or a dance recital, she could always be found in the audience showing her support and encouragement. Her door was always open for the pop-in visit from family, friends and neighbors. She was the champion potty trainer to many of her grandchildren and teacher of life's lessons. She perfected the art of letter writing and corresponded with many. No important occasion in the lives of her family or friends was passed by without hearing from Grandma. At Christmas time, her table would often be found filled with cards being written to those for whom she cared so much. "Grandma was a woman of faith, she attended church devotedly as well as watching it daily on TV, you knew where to find her between 10-10:30 a.m. each day.
