Obituary Condolences

GERARDO, HELENE ROISSING Helene Roissing Gerardo, 91, of New Hartford, (formerly of Harwinton and Torrington) passed on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at home surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late John Gerardo. Helene was born in Needham, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Peter Roissing and Alice (Syversen) Roissing. Helene is survived by her children, Tod Gerardo and his wife Susan, Stephen Gerardo, Philip Gerardo and his fiancée Paula, and Ben Gerardo, with whom she resided. Helene grew up one of eight children. She is survived by her sister, Pearl (Bunny) Rich and husband Bob, and sister Terry McBeth and husband Bob. She was predeceased by her brother, Norman, sisters, Bertha, Ruth, Grace, and Lorna. Helene loved spending summers with her family and her sisters and their families at Buzzards Bay on Cape Cod. She and her husband shared their family vacation home in Nantucket with family for many years. Helene was always generous in sharing vacation homes, and would invite family to join her when vacationing on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Helene was a former Chairman of the Harwinton and Burlington Planning and Zoning Boards. She also was a Girl Scout Leader for several different troops. She was a volunteer for the Harwinton Ambulance Association, the Southbury Training School, Nutmeg Ballet, and visited patients with the Art Cart at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Helene will also be remembered for her love of animals, swimming, skiing, sailing, cooking, and her special talent for interior decorating. The service to celebrate Helene’s life will be held on Sunday, June 15, at the Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect Street, Torrington. Family and friends may call at the funeral home for the viewing from 11:30a.m. to 1:30p.m. At 1:30p.m. there will be a service commemorating Helene’s life.
