WINSTED >> Ruth M. Stone, 75, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Born on Aug. 24, 1938, in Bristol, she was the youngest of four children of the late Albert E. and Edna (Sambuco) Stone.
She leaves behind two sisters, Nancy Stone of Plainville, and Barbara Chartier and her husband Robert of Keene, New Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Stone of Terryville, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Ruth spent many years in Southbury Training School. With her partner, Kathy Gleason, she became one of the first in the state to live independently in her own apartment in the loving and supportive town of Winsted. Diane Gilman of Litchfield was their advocate and friend during this time and for many years thereafter. Prior to her retirement, Ruth had worked at Stop N Shop for many years. In her younger years, she participated in Special Olympics and joined a bowling team. She loved animals and had a goldfish and a guinea pig. She was a pleasant companion with a good sense of humor and loved to gently tease family members. She had a positive and practical attitude toward life. In her elder years, her attentive and loving niece Candace Stone supported her in independent living. She attended Geer Adult Day Care in Canaan which she enjoyed.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Church in New Hartford.
