TORRINGTON >> James R. Phelan, 88, of Torrington, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Schellinger) Phelan for 60 years. Mr. Phelan was born on Nov. 16, 1924, in Wyandotte, Michigan, son of the late James and Mary (Bednarek) Phelan.

He was employed by DuPont as a Chemical Engineer until his retirement. An avid sports fan, he also enjoyed gardening, golfing and working on small projects around his home.
In addition to his loving wife Elizabeth, he is survived by four daughters, Gayle Phelan of Torrington, Diane Yeomans of Honeybrook, Pennslyvania, Teresa Konsko of Chalfont, Pennsylvania; Colleen Phelan of Decatur, Georgia; two brothers, Alvin Phelan of Texas, Donald Phelan of Michigan; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Gebolys.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 9, with the cortege leaving at 11:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington to St. Joseph`s Church, 31 Oak St., Winsted for a Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Burial will be held in the spring. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home.
