Canton >> Margaret "Peg" Bertha Blackburn 95, of Canton, wife of the late Harry Blackburn passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013. Born in Torrington, on May 15, 1917 to Eugene and Berthe (Toscano) Schaer, she was the last surviving sibling of her brothers and sisters.
She leaves her son Harry R. Blackburn and wife Jayne of Melbourne, Florida and her daughter Anne Ziemba and husband Julius of Canton. She also leaves granddaughters Patti Klein and her husband Russell and their children Maxwell, Amy and Henry; Elizabeth Cadwallader and her husband Adam and their children Abigail and Lela; Meredith Blackburn; and Emily Ziemba. She also leaves grandsons Christopher Ziemba, Andrew Ziemba, Michael Ziemba and wife Elizabeth and their children Abby and Olivia, and Ryan Blackburn. She leaves her sister-in-law Bette Schaer of Torrington and many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was a founding member of the Torrington Bridge Club. She loved to golf and played at many courses in CT. She was a member of the Winchester Grange and was active in the French Congregational Church, and later the United Congregational Church. She belonged to several women's service organizations in Torrington for many years.
After her husband retired, they moved to Melbourne Beach, Florida and continued to enjoy life there. She then relocated to Farmington, and finally settled in Canton, six years ago. She always enjoyed family and friends and had a good sense of humor.
There will be a service Saturday, Feb .23, at 11 a.m. at the United Congregational Church in Torrington, followed by a reception in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Book of Remembrance at the United Congregational Church, 1622 Torringford Street, Torrington, CT 06790
