VERNON >> Frederick "Fred" L. Edwards, 83, of Vernon, loving husband of over 59 years to Shirley (Force) Edwards, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer for many years. He was born and raised in Elmira, New York, the son of Arthur L. and Helen (Spliedt) Edwards.
Fred graduated with a B.A. from Hobart College in 1951 where he was a member of the honorary economic society Gamma Omicron Tau. He moved with his family to Vernon in 1967. Fred was an associate of the Society of Actuaries and retired after more than 20 years with the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Fred was very civic minded and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, mentored inner city children, and served on the Rockville High School accreditation committee. He was a very active member of the Rockville United Methodist Church and was Treasurer for many years. Fred enjoyed gardening, playing cards with family and friends, and all sports. He loved people, had a good sense of humor, and loved to tell and hear jokes.
In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by his beloved children, Allie Secor and her partner, Dr. Carolyn Moore and her daughter Elizabeth Moore of Kentucky, F. Kenneth Edwards and his wife Lorrie of Torrington, Dr. Keith Edwards and his wife Magda of the Czech Republic, Kevin Edwards and his wife Donna of Granby, and former son-in-law Dr. John Secor of Kentucky; his grandchildren: Michael, James, and Alan Secor, Alex and Jeffrey Edwards, Erika Edwards, William and Thomas Edwards; and several nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his sister Lois Ann Wallace.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. at the Rockville United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the staff at Woodlake at Tolland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their attentive care of Fred and his family.
