Torrington Company Retiree
TORRINGTON >> Alfred Maraia, 93 of Torrington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine Joan (Cover) Maraia.
He was born in Torrington, son of the late Carmine and Mary(Silano) Maraia. He was a graduate of the State Trade School and later served in the U.S. Army and was a proud veteran of World War II.
Pop went on to a long and satisfying career with the Torrington Company, working in the spoke and nipple department for 38 years as a master machinist. He earned awards for his ideas on improving the efficiencies of the many machines he was responsible for maintaining. When his department was acquired by Monogram Industries, he moved to Indiana to help set up the machinery. He retired in 1982 as a foreman and was a member of the Foreman's club for many years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and had the best vegetable garden in the land. He was an expert carpenter and could repair most anything. During his retirement he and his brother in law, Frank Manfredi had a saw sharpening business and repaired small engines as well. They also built several custom homes in the 50's and 60's.
He cherished his family and is survived by his daughter, Eileen Piccolo, of Mamaroneck, New York, His two "boys" James Maraia and his companion, Judy Stella. Fred Maraia and his wife Donna, both of Torrington, two sisters, Clara and Julia Maraia, of Torrington, his grandchildren, Jaime Carta and husband Mario of New Rochelle, New York, Kelly Borducci and husband Chris of Port Chester, New York, Mary Maraia and friend Reymond, and Michelle Taylor and husband Joe of Torrington, Nicholas Maraia of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Jaclyn Maraia of Torrington, his great-grandchildren, Makayla, Lola and Romy, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
The family would like to thank his caregivers; Diane, Kathy, Jackie, Charlene, Mary, and the Hospice Program of VNA for the care, compassion and comfort given throughout Pop's journey.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 11 at 8:45 a.m. from Phalen Funeral Home, 285 Migeon Ave., Torrington to Saint Peter Church for a Mass at 9:30. Burial will follow at New St Francis Cemetery.
