Charles Abeling

1933 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
TORRINGTON >> Charles Abeling, a lifelong Torrington resident and husband of Jan Peterson Abeling, died Friday, Aug. 16, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 80.
Born March 3, 1933, in Torrington, Mr. Abeling was the son of the late Raymond and Catherine Murphy Abeling.
Mr. Abeling was a member of the Torrington High School Class of 1950. After high school, he served three years in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Europe during the Korean War, serving in Spain, France, Italy and Greece during his deployment. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his efforts.
Once home, Mr. Abeling was a carpenter and builder by trade. He spent the majority of his working years with C.H. Nickerson & Co. Inc., later with O&G Industries. Even after his retirement some 15 years ago, Mr. Abeling's love of carpentry led him to work on several jobs throughout the area until about three years ago.
He had a love of sports, particularly the Boston Red Sox, and spending time with his family and friends. He devoted much of his life to his love of his wife, Jan, whom he married on May 23, 1969, and his large family.
Along with his wife, Mr. Abeling is survived by his four daughters and their husbands, Kim Audia and her husband, Philip; Kristin Tullock and her husband, Steve; Kelli Pagano and her husband, Frank; and Kylee Gioiele and her husband, Brian; a brother; a sister; 11 grandchildren, Paige, Phil Audia, Riley, Emily and Justin Tullock, Mason and Nathaniel Pagano, and Jeff, Tori, Madison and Matthew Gioiele; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Mark and William Abeling; and a sister, Lillian "Lil" Jennings.
Funeral Services and burial at Hillside Cemetery are at the convenience of the family.
