HOLMES, ROBERT W. Robert W. Holmes, 83, of Marshall Street died on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at his home after a 56 year battle with heart disease. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Belladella) Holmes for 64 years. He was born April 13, 1932 in Winsted; the son of the late Ernest and Laura (Wohrley) Holmes and lived here all his life. Upon graduation from the Gilbert School; he was awarded the Nesbit Scholarship to Yale University where he studied Engineering. He was employed by the Torrington Co., in the Engineering Dept., for 27 years retiring in 1980, as the heart condition worsened. In his 20s and 30s, he was very active in the Winsted Methodist Church acting as Group Leader for the Methodist Youth Fellowship and as Chairman of the Every Member Canvass Fund Raiser. He was a member of the CT Chapter #148 of the American Society of Tool & Manufacturing Engineers, serving as Membership Chairman for a number of years and was presented with the ASTME Service Award. Mr. Holmes was also a former member of St. Andrew’s Masonic Lodge #64. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Ernest Holmes; a son, Robert M. (Debra) Holmes; daughters, Karen (Brian) Cornell, Lisa Holmes and Linda Holmes; 5 grandchildren, Rob and Jeff Holmes and Eric (Christine), Matt (Kimberly) and Nicole (Erin) Cornell; and great-grandchildren, Landon and Mason Holmes and Aubree, Gabriella and Jacob Cornell. He was predeceased by a brother, Peter Holmes. Friends may call on Friday, October 2, 2015 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 6–8 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the funeral home at 11 AM. Burial will be follow at Forest View Cemetery, Winsted.
