JOHN POLITO Obituary

POLITO, DR. JOHN “JACK” C. Dr. John “Jack” C. Polito, 89, of Harwinton, CT, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary (Davidson) Polito for 63 years. Dr. Polito was born June 3, 1926, in Waterbury, CT, son of the late Helen (Clarke) and Dr. Frank Polito. He served his country with the US Navy, in the Pacific. He was a graduate of Yale University and of the New York Medical College. He served a fellowship at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society for 40 years. He was a surgeon on staff at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital from 1958 until his retirement in 1991. An avid Yankee fan and golfer, he was a longtime member of the Torrington Country Club and of Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club in Jupiter, FL. He also was a member of the Torrington Elk’s Lodge #372 and of the Torrington Bridge Club. He is survived by one son, Dr. William Polito and his wife Leslie of Litchfield; two daughters, Jacqueline Kulhowvick and her husband Joseph of Harwinton, Margaret Polito of New York City; four grandchildren, Michael and Abigail Kulhowvick, Frank and Thomas Polito. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Joanne Doyle. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South St., Litchfield, CT. Relatives and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Education Fund, 540 Litchfield St., Torrington, CT 06790, to the attention of Angela Champagne. Jack always had a mischievous smile on his face,and was a person who lit up a room.He was very friendly to my folks for decades. I am sure my mom,97 yrs.old will mourn his passing.

Dr. Polito used to scare me as a child mainly because he looked like Kojak, but I wish as a nurse I could have worked with him more. My funniest memory is when he walked into the OR at Winsted Hospital, looked at me and said "that's it, time to retire. I scrubbed with the mother now I'm scrubbed with the kid!" He had retired by the time I started at CHH but he always had that smile when he came to visit us. You'll be missed
