Chuck passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side on July 7, 2012 from age related illness, in Eugene, Oregon, age 74. Chuck was laid to rest at his parents' gravesite in Chamberlain, South Dakota. A Celebration of Life is planned in Eugene on Thursday, December 27 at 1-3 p.m. at Sweetwaters at the Valley River Inn where those who loved Chuck can come by to raise a glass in a final toast to him.
Chuck grew up in Portland and Chamberlain. After graduating from high school in Chamberlain, he began working for the local TV station KPLO; a beloved job where his outgoing personality shined. He met Kathleen Raines (Kaye) and they married in 1961. The young couple took an opportunity of a lifetime: they moved to France where Chuck was offered a job brokering cars for military personnel. The couple extensively traveled throughout Europe and took a break when their first daughter, Christine, was born in 1963. In 1964, the couple returned to the US and built a home in Redding, California. In 1967, Kaye and Chuck moved to Eugene on Delmar Place just in time for the arrival of their second daughter, Stacey.
While raising their family, Chuck and Kaye were very socially active. They played golf, went to Oregon football games, played cards with friends, were members of the Elks Club, and hosted unforgettable "Tom and Jerry" Christmas parties.
Chuck enjoyed remodeling their home and backyard and made it a great place to grow up. In Eugene, they raised their family until his daughters went to college. Kaye and Chuck eventually divorced but remained lovely friends. Chuck later married Mary Haxby of Eugene.
His career highlights in Eugene included his own business as a large construction equipment broker and working for Waste Management leasing modular office spaces. After retirement from Waste Management, Chuck moved to Portland where his sister, Eula, lives.
Chuck is survived by his daughters, Christine (and James) of San Diego and Stacey (and Jason) of Bend, by his sister Eula Smith of Tigard, by his niece Gail Peake of Tigard and by his four grandchildren, Emily, Brett, Jane and William.
Though he lost contact with his friends in his final years, he spoke of them often and told many funny stories and recounted fond memories!
Chuck will always be remembered as the life of the party. Come join us for the Celebration of Life on December 27!!
