Obituaries from the Past Three Days

Gerety, Mary Anne
The sun doesn't shine as bright since our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, Mary Anne Gerety, left us peacefully and entered her heavenly home on Monday, April 25, 2015. She was a loving, strong and committed woman, who will be deeply missed. She was 85 years old. Mary Anne was born in West Point, Nebraska in 1929. She was the third child born of six children to Agnes and John Brosnahan. Mary Anne's family lived in Nebraska, Wyoming and Washington before settling in Oregon. Mary Anne graduated from West Lynn High School and then worked for the Social Security Administration. In 1952 she married Nicholas "Ed" Gerety at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Oregon City. She then moved to Klamath Falls that began Ed's 30+ year career with Southern Pacific Railroad. Mary Anne and Ed moved the family to Deming, New Mexico and then back to Oregon. They lived for a brief time in Oakridge, OR before settling in Springfield, OR where they lived and raised their six children in the same home for 48 years. Mary Anne worked for Sears before retiring in 1985 the same year her husband Ed retired from the railroad. Mary Anne and Ed sacrificed to educate their children in Catholic Schools; St. Alice Catholic Grade School (Springfield) and Marist High School (Eugene). Mary Anne loved her St. Alice Parish Community, a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Guild and Altar Society, Eucharistic Minister for the home bound and volunteered for many efforts of Catholic Community Services, in particular the community food bank to fulfill her Corporal Works of Mercy duties. Mary Anne was the quintessential home economist; she enjoyed cooking meals for her family and extended family, seamstress, quilter, home decorator and all around home repair handy-woman. Mary Anne and Ed spent much of their early retirement years at their property in Florence, OR; camping, fishing and crabbing with their children and grandchildren. When not in Florence, they planned trips to Reno and spring vacations in Yuma, AZ. Mary Anne is survived by five of her six children: son, David Gerety and his wife Sandra (Bowling Green, OH), daughter, Susan Stewart (Vancouver, WA), daughter, Monica Meyer and husband Robert (Battle Ground, WA), daughter Doreen Fraser and husband Paul (Bend, OR) and daughter Alane Fleming and husband Jeff (Eugene, OR), seven Grandchildren: Mollie Garre and husband Justin (McKinney, TX), Michael McCormick (Vancouver, WA), Cameron Stewart and wife Melissa (Port Orchard, WA), Hayley Thomas and husband Nick (Vancouver, WA), Abby Elliott and husband Jon (Vancouver, WA), Ryan Gerety (Germany) and Evan Gerety (Bowling Green, OH), four Great-Grandchildren: Jace Garre, Melia Garre, James Stewart and Emma Thomas, siblings: sister Patricia Radich (Florence, OR) and brother Patrick Brosnahan (Shelton, WA). Mary Anne has many nieces and nephews throughout Oregon, Washington and California and always enjoyed visits from them. Mary Anne was preceded in death by her husband Nicholas "Ed" Gerety (2009), her son Nicholas (1984), her mother, Agnes Brosnahan (1997), her father, John Brosnahan (1961), brother William Brosnahan (1980), Joseph Brosnahan (2009) and Vincent Brosnahan (2008). A Rosary will be held Friday, May 1st, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Alice Catholic Church, Springfield. Please join us at the Funeral Mass scheduled for Saturday, May 2 at 1:30pm at St. Alice Catholic Church at 1510 "F" Street, Springfield, OR; a reception will follow in the adjacent Community Center. Flowers can be sent to St. Alice Catholic Church or donations in lieu of flowers can be donated to Catholic Community Services in Mary Anne's name.
