Jacobson, Robert Bruce
Robert Bruce Jacobson 1944 - 2016 Robert Bruce (Bob) Jacobson passed away April 9, 2016 at Sacred Heart Medical Hospital from complications during his battle with cancer. Bob was born on May 16, 1944 in Minneapolis. His parents, Ernest and Amy Jacobson raised their family in the small town of Nevis, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, where he was an acolyte for many years. Bob attended school in Nevis, graduating as the valedictorian of his class in 1962. He was active in basketball, baseball, band, choir, speech and drama. He also loved folk music and played the guitar. He worked at his father's service station from age 10 until he was in college. Bob attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota from 1962-1966. He was active in student government, a member of Chi Delta Phi Society, while constantly playing and following sports. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in pre-medical studies. He attended medical school at the University of Minnesota from 1966 to 1970. In 1968, Bob married Linda Torvik of Sisseton, South Dakota. In 1970, they accepted a medical residency in Portland, Oregon at Emanuel Hospital. After his residency and the birth of their two children, David and Kirsten, Bob and Linda moved to Eugene in 1974, where he joined a single OB-GYN practice. The practice grew to become Women's Medical Services in 1977, which later merged with two other practices to form Women's Care PC in 1989. Bob was active in leadership and advisory roles within the medical community. He practiced medicine full time for 26 years and then continued to be affiliated with Women's Care part-time until his death. He continued to practice medicine assisting in surgery, volunteering in a charity clinic, and providing mentorship and support to physicians in Eugene. Between office hours and late-night baby deliveries, Bob and Linda made lifelong friends and shared in communities of faith at Central Lutheran and Emmaus Lutheran church. Bob sang in the church choir, played city league basketball and softball, coached David's baseball teams, attended Duck games, and gardened. He loved to run, ski, and spend time in Hawaii. He loved the water, especially snorkeling, and later in life deepened friendships with his son David and others on the golf course. Above all, he delighted in his role as "Grandpa Bob." He was the proudest fan and supporter for each of his grandchildren. People who spent time with Bob remember his wit, his charm, his caring nature, and the joy he took in his family. He always smiled and always had a joke to share. He listed his blessings as family and support from friends and "of course my Lord's redemption," signing his letters "Love and Peace." May he be filled with both. Bob is survived by his wife, Linda of Eugene; daughter Kirsten & husband, Larry Hovey of Lake Oswego and son David & Wife, Sandi Jacobson of Eugene; seven grandchildren; sister Vicki Obenland, and niece Christine McKigney. Cremation arrangements were made by The Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Research Institute (cancerresearch.org). A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday April 30th at 11:00 am at Eugene Faith Center, located at 1410 West 13th in Eugene.
