Barbara Gale West, 85, died June 30th, 2013 of natural causes at Riverbend Hospital in Springfield Oregon. She had been a resident of Emerald Valley Assisted Living in Eugene, Oregon since 2008.
Barbara was born August 6th, 1927 in Bend, Oregon. She attended grade school in Bend and High School in Corbett Oregon. Her parents had moved to Bridal Veil from Bend when she was a teenager.
She met her husband, Don, in Eugene when she was attending the University of Oregon as an art student. Don had just left the Marines after serving during World War II.
They married and lived in Portland. Barbara worked in a department store, then as a telephone operator. They lived a short while in Vanport and were out of town on advice of her father when the flood hit the town. They found their apartment about a mile away in the stockyard the next day. Then they moved to Bridal Veil, where Don worked in the mill and Barbara was a homemaker. Barbara gave birth to 3 children - Riley, Teresa and Mark.
The family moved to California for a few years, then to Missoula Montana for the next 16 years. Don and Barbara moved to Eugene in 1977 for employment reasons and the children soon followed.
During all these years of raising a family and afterwards, Barbara was an extremely creative artist and homemaker. She painted with oils, used charcoals, pastels and colored pencils for various art projects all the way into her late 70s. She was good at related arts and crafts like dollmaking, sculpting miniature bears, and sewing clothing and creating costumes for her children. She also made small quilts for children new to foster families. She was an avid golfer for much of her adult life and was a member of Shadow Hills Country Club in Eugene. She also loved her animals and had numerous dogs and cats over the years.
A service was already held by family and friends and she is to have her ashes scattered according to her wishes. Contributions in her name can be made at Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene Oregon.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Don, son Riley and daughter Teresa. She is survived by her son Mark and grandchildren Nathan, Josh, Natasha, and Brittney.
