Susan Rasmussen Obituary

Susan A.

Rasmussen

Susan Armet Draper Rasmussen passed away on February 23, 2014 of H1N1 flu virus. She was born March 29, 1942, in Grants Pass, Oregon, the third child of four born to Andy and Margaret Bunnell Draper. The family moved to Oakridge, where Susan grew up and graduated from Oakridge High School in 1960. After one year of college at Brigham Young University, Susan returned to the Eugene area and on May 11, 1963, married Berand Wayn Nielsen. Four sons were born to them. They later divorced and Susan became a property manager for a local real estate company and began her professional career.

Since 1980 Susan has been a real estate agent in Springfield and actively involved in business and civic activities. On October 18, 1982, Susan married Gary Lee Rasmussen and added a son and daughter to the family. Susan and Gary were the owner-operators of Keystone Real Estate. Susan was named Springfield Realtor of the Year in 1992, served on the Multi-Family Housing Council State Board of Directors, and often spoke on tenant and landlord issues. Susan was considered a peacemaker and known for sharing techniques and management strategies with her colleagues.

Susan was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities and as a teacher in the women's program. She was known for her sense of humor and straightforward comments.

Susan is survived by her children: Phillip Wayne Nielsen, Stephen Patrick Nielsen (Nancy), Matthew Allan Nielsen, Stephanie Marie Rasmussen, Jason Lee Rasmussen; and ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by son Christopher Dale Nielsen and husband Gary.

The memorial service will be held at twelve noon on Friday, March 7, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3500 West 18th Avenue, Eugene, Oregon. All are welcome to join in a celebration of life. Major Family Funeral Home is providing cremation services. Please go to majorfamilyfuneralhome.com to sign guest book.

After I read about Susan's passing, I wondered what I could possibly say to honor such a life well lived. I met Susan in 1972 when I went to work for Pluid Insurance Agency. Early on, it was obvious that this woman stood just on the other side of sainthood. After raising 4 rowdy boys,(and many insurance claims later) she also provided shelter to "other orphans", whether it be children or animals. She was generous to a fault. When people took advantage of her, she would giggle, and say,"oh well." Her resiliency during her lung issues was a true indicator of her ongoing tenacity. My heart goes out to the Nielsen-Rasmussen family. It was a life well lived..... it was a life well loved. Shotzie Pluid

As a legal aid attorney who represents tenants in Lane County, I worked with Susan on a number of occasions, although not for several years. Susan was always honest and caring and fair. I considered her a friend. I'll miss her.

Aunt Suzie will be missed. I loved her love of animals. As a child I loved coming to her house because she always had so many animals. She had a great sense of humor and made me laugh. Although I never saw her too much as an adult I will never forget her.
