Van Ordstrand

Jean Van Ordstrand of Springfield, Oregon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 11th at Gateway Gardens, at the age of 85. Her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Cindy Van Ordstrand, were by her side.

Nellie "Jean" Marks was born August 2nd of 1933, the fifth of eight children, to Ray and Florence Marks in Island City, Oregon. The family moved to Eugene in 1943 when Jean was 10 years old.

She married Don Van Ordstrand on November 9th of 1951, while he was on furlough from the Army, and they were together just short of 50 years. They had son Mike in 1953, and adopted daughter Debbie in 1960. The family attended church at Willamette Christian Center, making many lifelong friends. Later they attended Springfield Faith Center and took up most of an entire row each Sunday, with assorted family members. Jean sang with her sister on a local church radio station for several years. She had an evangelist's heart, and brought most of her grandkids to Bible classes.

Jean was a florist, working for Eddie's Flowers in Eugene for a few years. She arranged flowers for several of her grandchildren's weddings. She was a gifted oil painter, and leaves behind many paintings treasured by her family. She instigated the Marks Family Reunion, a large three-day gathering that has continued annually for 34 years now. Her favorite pastime was always hanging out with family.

Don passed away in 2001, but her growing family of nine grandkids comforted Jean: Aaron (Shea), Jason (Mindy), Jeremy (Heather), Daniel (Laurie), Ryan, Brandon, Jillian, and step-granddaughters Melody and Amanda; and now eleven great-grandkids. Siblings Glen, Wes, Cap and Skip survive her, along with her first daughter-in-law, Patti (Mike) Hanson, son-in-law Rusty (Tammy) Flanders. She was preceded in death by her daughter Debbie, her parents, siblings Stella, Dave, Ed, and grandson Jason. She was loved to the very last second, and will be missed until we meet her again on the other side.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Jean on Saturday, September 22nd, at noon, at Springfield Faith Center, 600 Hayden Bridge Way in Springfield. Arrangements entrusted to Springfield Memorial Funeral Home. Please access the obituary and you are invited to sign the guestbook at
