Little Dow Player (his friends called him Dow), age 88, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, passed at home in the early morning hours of August 26. He "..slipped the surly bonds of earth..and touched the face of God" and is now resting peacefully in the arms of his savior Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years Patricia Player, grandson Robert Player, and his sister Marcelle Lee. He leaves behind four children, Mark, wife Katie, with sons Zach, Adam and Hunter; Paul with daughter Trinity and son Trenton; Karen Chester, husband Tom, with daughters Megan and Emily, and Bryan, wife Leah, and son Sam and daughter Ellie. He also has seven great grandchildren.

Born at home in Manning, SC, January 9, 1930. He grew up in South Carolina living in several different locations. At an early age he grew a passion for aviation, starting with hand-built balsa wood gliders, hand-line controlled competition stunt model planes, advancing to more than 5000 hours of flight time mostly as a Navy pilot. Having worked since his early teens and saving everything he could for lessons, his first solo flight was at the age of 16, and his last flight was 30 years later. He never lost his love for all things aviation. He was not one to talk about the unique things he had done over his career unless asked, but these things included hunting Russian submarines during the cold war, search and rescue in the South Pacific, and piloting the first aircraft to fly over both North and South Poles.

After retirement he moved his family to Eugene, Oregon and set down roots. Together with his wife Patricia they made Eugene home for the next three generations. His greatest joys were seeing his children grow up and even more so, seeing any baby grand or great-grandchildren at any time. Even in his final days his youngest great-grandchild, just a few weeks old could make him smile. We miss you.

Funeral service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church on September 9, 2018, at 2:00 PM
