Suzanne Steussy

1956 - 2018

Suzanne Frances Steussy passed away unexpectedly on March 16, 2018 in Corvallis, Oregon. She was born on October 31, 1956 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of three children born to Robin and Ethel (Hajdu) Steussy. In 1959 the family moved from Boston to Eugene, where she spent most of her life. She attended Edison Elementary and Roosevelt Junior High. The family spent a year in Vienna, Austria, where Suzanne learned such fluent German that Viennese natives had no idea they were speaking to Americans, unless her sister spoke up and gave the game away. The family returned to Eugene in time for Sue to graduate with the South Eugene class of 1974. There she played on the tennis team and developed an interest in the arts, especially photography. She became an accomplished photographer, eventually earning an Associate's Degree from Lane Community College. She supported her artistic endeavors by working at Sacred Heart Hospital, and there she developed an interest in Feldenkrais therapy. She applied for a scholarship, and completed a rigorous four-year training to become a Feldenkrais practitioner. In the early 90s she decided to move to Portland, where the market for Feldenkrais was better. She continued to support herself in medical offices, developing an unofficial specialty in optometry reception/scheduling. She continued to give group and private Feldenkrais sessions, and wanted that to become full-time work, but that did not happen. She returned to Eugene after 2009, working again in medical settings and helping her parents. She resumed hiking with the Obsidians, as she had done before moving to Portland. She was a kind, cheerful person with an infectious laugh, and she will be deeply missed by all. Suzanne was preceded in death by her father, Robin Steussy. Suzanne is survived by her mother, Ethel Steussy; her brother, Fredric, both of Eugene; her sister, Edwina, of Madison, WI.; and her loving cousins John and Sandra Heyer of Whitewater, WI. Online condolences can be made at mchenryfuneralhome.com. A remembrance ceremony will be held Sat., May 19 at 11:00 a.m., at the Obsidian Lodge, 2250 E. 29th Ave., Eugene.
