Donald G. Brown, 90, died peacefully with his beloved grandson, Davin, by his side, and family gathered in Bend, Oregon. Don was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, to Edgar "Brownie" Brown and Alice Gordon Dickey. Before graduating from Wakefield HS in 1940, he set off to see America in the Model A Ford he rebuilt to travel through all 48 states.
He served in the 10th Mountain Division ski troops in Italy during World War II, then returned to graduate in journalism from the University of Oregon where he met his beautiful wife, Marva Hutchison. He worked many years as a reporter and business editor at the Eugene Register Guard.
Don later published a newsletter, "Brown's Business Reporter", had business news programs on KVAL and KEZI TV stations in Eugene, and did public relations work.
He built a log cabin at Crescent Lake which he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Don also built a geodesic dome in La Pine, Oregon, where he and Marva retired and traveled once more across America, visiting friends, family, and 10th Mountain Division brothers. Dad lived alone in his dome home after Marva's passing in 2010.
Survivors include one brother, Lloyd, sister, Harriet (Sam), 3 children: Sue Anne Henneck, Barry and Rob Brown, 4 grandchildren: Davin Brown, Heidi Brown, Brandy Brown, Alisyn Henneck, 2 great-grandchildren, Kiana and Kai, and his devoted caregiver Cindy Travis.
Don described himself as a "citizen-soldier" and an observer/journalist. He loved reading, writing, and published a book, "Love Letter to Americans", a tribute to many of the people and events that made a difference in his life. His outlook was insightful, original, sometimes provocative, and humorous. We dearly miss you, father, grandfather, brother, friend.
A private ceremony with military honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetary at a later date. Remembrances in Don's name may be made to Partners in Care Hospice House in Bend, Oregon. Please sign the guest book at www.registerguard.com/legacy
