Sheila Constance Rolfe

Sheila Rolfe Obituary

ROLFE, Sheila Constance Died at home in Vancouver, B.C. on December 15, 2010. She leaves her husband Havelock, her son Basil (Kathrine Light) and their children Charlotte & Max, her daughter Valerie (Peter Lupini) and their children Jesse & Elliot, and her brother John Madden (Sidney), as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and her beloved cat, Finn. Born in London, England on January 4, 1935 to Wyndham and Kathleen Madden, Sheila came to Canada at age three. The family settled in Vancouver where Sheila after a runaway attempt at age 12 enjoyed happy years at Queen Margaret's School in Duncan. She graduated from UBC with honours in English and Spanish, enjoying the Mussoc Club where she met Havelock. Sheila partnered motherhood with writing, first as a children's book author, and later penning short humorous pieces (what else?), book reviews for CHQM and travel articles. Sheila's favourite place in the world was the cottage on Gambier Island, adored for its simplicity and wildlife. Sheila was quick to laugh in life, brave and uncomplaining during her illness. She was gracious and grateful toward all her caregivers from the BC Cancer Agency and the Home Palliative Care. We'll be forever thankful for their compassion. A celebration of Sheila's life will be held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, 3811 Point Grey Road on January 4th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to the charity of your choice, or feed a homeless cat. 613087

I was so very sorry to hear about Sheila's passing. My deepest sympathies are extended to my dear friend Val the Pal, her family, Basil and his, and Havelock. Mrs Rolfe, as I knew her, was as funny as her daughter. Her creative, kind and loving spirit endures in her family. Her love of our 4 legged friends was always so touching and I marveled many times when I visited the Rolfe home what new creatures I'd be meeting, as Val and Sheila always had someone new to take in and care for. I really hope all the wonderful memories of Sheila will help to sustain you during these dark days ahead.

I am so sorry to hear of Sheila's passing. What a lovely lady. She was such a wonderful friend to my Mum, Kay. They so enjoyed their walks, talks and lunches together. She was our "go to" person for any grammatical faux pas. I know they are sharing their love of words and wit in a much more "elevated" place. My deepest sympathy to Havelock, Basil, Valerie and their families.

I enjoyed my many visits with Sheila while walking our georgous neighbourhood. She always had a beautiful smile, her gentle voice always had a fresh and good joke. My sincere condolences to the family.

My condolences to Havelock and all the family. I knew Sheila from meeting her at LWR/JardineRolfe/JLTCanada functions and, after I moved east, through her humorous Christmas cards - always with a joke enclosed. I will miss very much her notes and smiles. She was a wonderful example to me of a gracious and intelligent person who did so many things right and well. As the family is in my thoughts now, she will remain as a beacon of lightness and fun in my memories.

I will miss Sheila.

It's not that I saw much of her, or that we shared some secret. Sheila was part of Sheila and Havelock, dear friends of my parents. Mr and Mrs Rolfe. But Mrs Rolfe was one of the most engaging people I have ever met. She had a sense of humour that was always on target, with a smile that disarmed the target. I saw her at momentous events and I will miss her at future momentous events. My condolences go to her family and friends. I gratefully count myself among that group.

Though it is many years since Sheila was directly involved with Saints, her pleasant smile breaks through, as it frequently did when she appeared at the School as a school "mom". Condolences to Basil and the Rolfe family: a pleasure and a privilege to
be able to recall Sheila's time with us.

I had many a wonderful time going to the Rolfe's house in Southlands when I was young. Mrs. Rolfe was kind to me and encouraged me to play the piano. She made feel good with her positive input. She was generous and full of good humour.

Because of my dear cousin John Madden, I met Shelia many times but never got to kmow her although she was always gentle and friendly towards myself and my family, and was kind on my behalf when I was getting a new hearing aid in Vancouver this fall. Reading her Obit in the Times C, I wish that I had known her better, she sounds a spirited and courageous person to know. With my husband Tommy I send to her brother John and Sidney who have befreiended us so wonderfully, our wishes that the coming celebration of her life will bring a sharing of wonderful memories that will bring a measure of happiness and peace to their hearts. To John and Sidney and to Havelock and Basil and Valeie and Peter and family we send our loving thoughts this Christmas and always. Mary and Tommy Russell~
