Dewey Ellis

Dewey Elvin Ellis, 85, of Loveland, Colorado, passed away at Good Samaritan Village on April 27, 2013, after a long illness. Dewey was born on June 16, 1927, to Thomas Dewey Ellis and Beatrice Evelyn (Eubank) Ellis in Julesburg, CO. After graduating from Johnstown High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Enterprise aircraft carrier, which he considered one of the highlights of his life. He enjoyed the company of other WWII veterans. He attended Colorado State University (Aggies) for two years after his navy service.

Dewey married Sonja Sundstrom, from Lulea, Sweden, in October 1951 in Denver, CO. The couple lived in the Boulder-Longmont area for over 60 years. Dewey worked briefly for the Union Pacific Railroad, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He then worked for various dairies before joining IBM in 1969, when the company opened its Boulder facility. After he retired from IBM, Dewey moved with Sonja to a house overlooking a lake in Loveland.

Dewey came from pioneer stock and respected the land, animals and people of the West. Always donned in western attire - his favorite Stetson hats, cowboy boots and bolo ties - family and friends mattered most to him. Those who knew Dewey considered him one of the kindest people on earth. He was an outdoorsman who loved to hike, fish and hunt. In his gentle way, Dewey encouraged everyone to appreciate and preserve the beauty of our natural surroundings and resources.

Dewey is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sonja L. Ellis. He is also survived by two daughters, Gina Rhoads and her husband, Tim Rhoads, of Longmont, CO., Lisa Ellis of Colorado Springs, and one son, Thomas Ellis of Greeley, CO.; three grandchildren: Jessica Duncan, Luke Rhoads and Luke Ellis Blong; and three nieces and four nephews. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Dorothy Jean Lingelbach of Omaha, NE.

Dewey will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at Ryssby Church, 9000 N. 63rd Street, Longmont, CO. 80503 on Sat., May 11, at 2 pm.
