Gerald Boland

Gerald Boland of Lyons died during the recent flooding near his home. He was 80. Gerry was born on March 10, 1933 in Alton, Kansas to Ray E. Boland and Neva Reynolds Boland. He was fondly known as Sonny, as Gerry was shared by other cousins and neighbors. Gerry graduated from Alton High School in Alton, KS in 1951, he attended Loveland High School through his junior year. He worked for two years in Salina, Kansas before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army, that being the only way he could have afforded college, through the GI bill. He served at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, Fort Riley in Kansas and at Camp Poke in Louisiana during the Korean War. His singing group the Choral Aires followed Bob Hope throughout Korea. Expanding his horizons, he attended and graduated from Colorado State Teachers College, Greeley, in 1959. At college he was frequently seated next to Cheron Cruse, being alphabetically close in spelling. He took advantage to go on coffee dates and impress her further. They were married on August 2, 1959 in Steamboat Springs, CO. They would soon pick up and move, setting roots in Lyons from that time forward. Gerry taught in Lyons for 31 years; 5 years at the high school, 25 years teaching the 6th grade and 1 year as the 3rd grade teacher. He coached for 23 years and helped to mold young boys and girls through athletics. He made several appearances at the state basketball tournament. He also served as a Boy Scout leader in the 1960's and 1970's in Lyons taking many groups to float/canoe the North Platte River near Saratoga, Wyoming. He was instrumental in starting Eco-Week for all 6th graders, taking them for an overnight adventure in the mountains learning great details of the outdoors, nature and the ecosystem. Gerry was a member of the Lyons Lions Club, Lyons Booster Club, Lyons Jaycees, American Legion, the Mason's and the Moose Lodge. Preceding him in death are his parents and a sister Dolores Carlson. Surviving are his wife Cheron; daughters Holli (Scott) Stetson of Hygiene; Amy (Zack) Hoh of Longmont; a son Brent (Sarah) Boland of Englewood; two sisters Ramona (Dallas) Sanders of Campion, Colorado and Johnene (Doug) Deasy of Mexico; and four grandchildren Nicolette and Landon Stetson and Asa and Amos Boland. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 11, 2013 at LifeBridge Christian Church.
