Karen Griffiths

Karen Rae Griffiths, 67, of Johnstown, CO passed away December 13, 2012. Many in the community knew her from her teaching days: she taught fourth grade at Letford Elementary in Johnstown for nearly twenty years and she was active with the local poetry club - "Life is poetry" was part of her philosophy. She loved working with dogs and she loved ravens (even talking to them when she could), and she delighted in tracking down local and family history - she wrote a book combining her passion for history and poetry named "Reflections on Lake Lenore", published in 2008. She loved the outdoors and she had a special place in her heart for Ouray, CO, where she had hoped to retire. She was born in Denver on November 25th, 1945. She graduated East High School in 1963 and went on to receive her BA in education from the University of Denver in 1967. Later she earned her master's degree in special education from the University of Washington in 1975. She married Arthur Griffiths December 23, 1967. She is survived by her husband Art, her sons Travis and Everett, her daughter Anne Villarreal, and her grandson Lee. Those wishing to make a financial donation in her memory can contribute to the American Field Service (AFS) at http://www.afsusa.org/donate/ AFS is the oldest exchange student program in the world, and Karen supported its goals by sending each of her children on a year-long exchange program abroad. A memorial service will be held at Viegut Funeral Home, 1616 N. Lincoln Ave. in Loveland on January 5, 2013 at 10:00am. Reception following services at the Viegut Reception Center.
