Velma Detter(1929 - 2014)

On July 9th, 2014, Velma Irene Detter died, leaving this world the same way she lived it, with grace, dignity, and love for the people around her after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born May 29th, 1929 outside of Bird City, Kansas during a rain storm that washed out the road making it impossible for the doctor to reach them. Preceding her in death was her mother, Verla Esther Boersma, and twin sister Thelma Elaine who died in childbirth. Her father, Clifton Hoyt Boersma, died when she was nine years old. Also proceeding her in death were her adoptive parents, Aunt Anna Irene Jones and Riley E. Jones. She also lost a brother, Donald Lee Boersma, when he was 65. She married Victor Detter on March 2, 1947 at her parents home in Loveland. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before his passing. They retired to Loveland in 1982 after 35 years of farming dry-land wheat in Anton, Colorado. Velma loved to travel and was always adventurous. She loved family, nature, animals, birds, flowers and hiking. She had her own four wheeler and she zip lined at the age of 79 in Guatemala. Even at 85, she refused to become "one of those old people". Ever young at heart, enjoying her family up until her final day. Spending time at the cabin in Crystal Lakes was always a joyous occasion for her. She loved the mountains and the endless beauty of Colorado. Velma is survived by Terry and wife Marsha of Loveland, Vicki Biddle of Loveland, Sheri Colpitts and husband Emmett of Loveland, Gary and wife Debbie of Lafayette, Dan and wife Debbie of Campion, David and wife Linda of Loveland; 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grand children and one great, great grandchild. Visitation will be at 12 noon, followed by a funeral service at one p.m., Tuesday, July 15, at Allnutt- Hunter Chapel. Interment will be at Loveland Burial Park. A reception will follow the interment at the Allnutt Reception Center. Her legacy remains in her humor, grace, courage, and her positive outlook on life and love for her family.
