Jean Gaines

1919 - 2015

Jean A. Gaines, 96 of Loveland, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in his home on Wednesday, November 18, 2015. Jean Augustus Gaines was born on February 16, 1919 in Willard, CO to Alfred Lee and Millie (Augustus) Gaines. Jean met Carmel Nadine Schmitt in Boulder, Colorado and they were later married in Los Angeles, California on August 2, 1939 while Jean was serving in the U.S. Navy during WW II. Jean and Carmel moved to Loveland in 1948, where together they owned the business, Loveland Poultry, for 36 years. Jean was a graduate of State Prep School in Boulder and attended Colorado University. Jean served on the Loveland City Council for 16 years and was Mayor of Loveland for 8 years, a lifetime member of the Loveland Elks B.P.O.E. #1051 and an Elder Emeritus, First Christian Church. Jean's wife, Carmel N. Gaines of almost 73 years, passed away on July 1, 2012. Jean is survived by his son Richard B. Gaines and wife Mary Lou, grandchildren Colby Gaines, Marisa (Brian) Cox, great grandchildren Ruby & Orion Duggan, his daughter Jeanine (Paul) Dowden, grandchildren Stephanie (Patrick) Horak, great granddaughter Callie Horak, granddaughter Michelle Noble and great granddaughter Kaylee Armagost. Also surviving is his sister Elva Hardy and niece Jeanne Sherwin. Cremation has been conducted. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at the Loveland Burial Park Cemetery in Loveland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Larimer County or Boy's Town.org.
