Wilma Jane "Billie" North, age 82, passed away on January 3, 2013 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. She was born on April 15, 1930 in Ransom, Kansas the daughter of William F. and Enid C. Buxton Scott. The Scott family lived and raised their family in Ransom, Utica and Arnold finishing their high school years in Ransom. Donna was told on her first birthday that her parents brought her a special gift of a baby sister and for years Donna believed Billie belonged to her. Billie's sister Donna stated that Billie was always a beautiful person and dressed elegantly for dances and prom. Billie and her sister were in several vocal groups and competed with a quartet, consisting of good friends Vera Mae Schreiber and Joy Mishler. Billie also was active in sports playing basketball throughout her years of high school. On July 15, 1948 she married Dewey Keith North in Dighton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 23, 2009. Billie and Keith were devoted to each other in all life adventures. They enjoyed farming, ranching, business adventures, skiing, hiking, extensive travel and their growing family. Billie was an avid reader and loved to paint. She developed a love of the mountains from an early age. She and Keith enjoyed living in various cabins throughout the Big Thompson canyon. One of their garages was even converted into a paint consignment shop, "The In and Out Art Stop". She attended meetings with the Thompson Flood assoc., helped with memorial services and the pancake breakfasts. She was an elementary school teacher, member of the National Education Association, Phi Delta, Kappa, Big Thompson Flood Assoc. and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her teaching experiences included work in Beeler KS, Ness City KS, Brush CO and Loveland CO. Billie is survived by her sons, Lawrence Lynn North ( Judy), Lubbock, Texas and Daniel Curtis North (Mary), Sammamish, Washington; daughters, Laura Ann Betz (Dennis), Greeley, Colorado and Joy E Schell (James), Ness City; brothers, Richard C Scott (Pricilla), Kansas City, Kansas, Tom Scott (Marabeth), Topeka, Kansas; sisters, Donna North (Harley), Brownell, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dewey; grandson, Patrick Donovan Jochum; and her great-grandson, Hunter North. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 8, 2013, 10:30 A.M. at the First Mennonite Church, Ransom with burial in the McCracken Cemetery, McCracken, Kansas. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Sunday from 10:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. and on Monday from 9:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 7-9.
