Joseph McQuaid Obituary
Joseph McQuaid passed away January 31st, 2013, in Tucson Arizona after complications from a broken hip. Joe was born March 16, 1919, in Stuart, Iowa to William and Mary (Nevins) McQuaid. He left the family farm at the age of 16 to join the CCC camp. After hearing of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he immediately signed up for the Navy, serving on a destroyer escort in the North Atlantic. Their convoy was part of the D-Day invasion. After the war, he went to Guam working for Brown and Root Construction on the rebuild of the island. On a trip back to visit family in Iowa, he met Sylvia Harkin. In 1952 they married and spent 2 more years on Guam, then returned to Iowa. The couple moved to Loveland in 1959 with their 4 children. Joe worked construction for a few years, then maintenance for Loveland Foods until he retired in 1984. After retiring, besides his hobbies, he enjoyed his early morning coffee trips to McDonald's to visit with his friends and swap stories. He also traveled extensively, several trips to Ireland, a Nordic cruise, Egypt, the Bahamas to name a few. He was also fortunate to have made the trip back to Washington DC with the honor flight to visit the WWII memorial. He later met June McCasland, they shared the same passion for traveling and seeing new things. They married in 2008. Joe's hobbies were wood working and inventing things in his shop. He loved to whistle while he worked and was a great story teller. Mainly about his many adventures, but often just old time stories about characters in the small towns he grew up in. Joe had the Irish "gift of gab". Like so many of his "greatest generation", he believed in hard work and love of God and country. He was a devoted family man. Joe is survived by his wife June of Tucson, AZ, his children, Theresa Frasor, Joe K. McQuaid, Dan McQuaid, Mary (Phil) Barnhill all of Loveland. Grandchildren, Sean Frasor, Ryan Frasor, Erin McQuaid, Ciera McQuaid, Teri Clark, Kristen Marshall, Dawn Miller, Shauna Payne. Sister Mary Ann Bergman, Yankton, SD, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Francis, and his wife Sylvia (1983). Memorial Mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 10:00 AM on March 1st, 2013. Inurnment at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO on July 1st. Go to www.viegutfuneralhome.com for condolences.
