Mary Gay Sanders Rulla

Mary Gay Sanders Rulla was born on September 11, 1937 to Sidney Reuben Sanders and Alta Loreta Dennis Sanders in Baird, Texas. In 1942, Gay moved with her family to Abilene. She graduated from Abilene High School in 1956 where she was a member of the Acapella Choir and volleyball team.
On June 5, 1955, Gay married Calvin Clan Hancock. They moved to Midland in 1957 where they raised their three children. Gay attended the University of Texas Permian Basin and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. She was employed with J.W. Humbard and Associates and later became manager of Midland Energy Library. She married Lorin J. Rulla in Midland on April 29, 1990. After Lorin's death in 2009, she retired and moved to Lake Brownwood, which she referred to as "my little piece of heaven". She loved working in the yard, tending to her plants and birds, carving gourds and being doted on by her youngest son, Greg.
Those left behind to treasure Gay's memory are her children, Judy Hancock Mitchell and husband, Royce of Midland, Terry Hancock and wife, Carren of Bangs, Gregory Hancock of Lake Brownwood, and Stacie Lynn Chacon of Midland; her grandchildren include Melissa Howard Lofton of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Benjamin Howard and wife, Katey of Midland, Megan Mitchell Clark and husband, Coby of Dallas, Jeremiah Mitchell of New York City, Will Hancock of Midland, Haley Hancock of Spokane, Washington, Chandler Hancock of Bangs, and Anthony Michael Floyd of Midland; her great grandchildren, Hickson Howard and Leyla Floyd; and her brother, Jack Sanders and wife, Betty of Texarkana. Gay was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lorin.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 11:00 AM in Brownwood at Gay's home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home. Friends may sign the guestbook at www.blaylockfuneralhome.com.

I met Mary when I dated her son, Greg when we were in Pickwick Players and high school. I have always remembered Mary as a very pretty, kind, warm, and welcoming woman and I was deeply saddened to see that she had passed away. I found her obit quite accidentally as I was searching for contact info for Greg and, when I saw her face on the screen, I immediately knew who she was and many memories came flooding back.
Every time I visited Greg in the apartment in Midland, I was always welcome and time spent with Mary, and Greg provided me a sanctuary to escape my family's troubles and this is a very clear memory that I have of her to this day.

I would like to extend my very belated sympathy, and prayers, to all of her family, and friends. I know that this was a difficult time for all of you and I am sorry that this message found you so many years after the fact.

And to Greg - I am so very sorry to have found this information in this way and I wish that I could have physically been there for you. However, you and your family have never been out of my thoughts for very long, even after all these years. And you have never left my heart so I have always been with you, in spirit, during your grief and will always be here when we finally catch up with one another...

Years ago, when the world seemed kind of cold and dark, Gay provided a warm and wonderful ray of sunshine to me. She reawakened my confidence in my oil field career choice and kept me inspired with bright, happy and logical moral support. I'm privileged that she touched my life.

I was very sorry to hear about Gay. I extend my deepest sympathy to her loved ones in their loss.

Some people come into our lives and quietly go. Others stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same. May God comfort Gay's family in their sorrow.

Gay was my mentor of sorts. I already had some back ground in the oil business when I started at Midland Energy Library. I had been laid off by Chevron and out of work for two years when Gay hired me and my self-esteem was pretty low. She taught me the art of being a geotech and finding the hard to find data. Over time she gave me more and more responsibly and built my self-esteem. I moved on and became the manager at Geomap Company office in Midland for 13 years. Now I'm back following in Gay's foot steps and taking care of our baby as Manager of Midland Energy Library. I know Gay will be watching over my shoulder so I better get it right.

You will all ways be in my thoughts. RIP
