Deon Davenport Obituary

Deon Clair Davenport, 65, of Parker, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his home of natural causes on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015.
He was born on May 7, 1949, in Shelley, Idaho, to Clair Davenport and Mathel Roos Davenport. He was educated in the Salt Lake Valley, attending Union and Midvalley Elementary Schools, Midvale Junior High School and Hillcrest High School. He pursued his interests in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Architecture at Ricks College and the University of Utah.
During his college years, he spent two years to complete an LDS Mission to the Eastern states. After returning home, he continued his courtship with his sweetheart and wife-to-be, Diane Cardwell. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple Sept. 7, 1972 and have raised six wonderful children, Karla Dawn, Rick, Amy, Angie, Jennie and Tara.
After his college days, Deon spent many satisfying years in his chosen careers of graphic design in the Idaho Falls and Rexburg areas and counseling therapy at the Juvenile Correction Center in St. Anthony.
He began working in the Scouting program some 30 years ago. In 1989, Rick got to go to National Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, W. Va., with Deon as a national jamboree leader.
In the late 70s, he joined the Fort Henry Buckskinners and began lifelong friendships with folks across the United States. Fourth graders from schools all over the valley recognize "Curly" from the Student Rendezvous held in May at Krupp Scout Hollow.
In 2000, he sent out the first-ever invitation to join the Twin Butte Bunch for some cowboy shooting action. Little did those invited know that the entire Twin Butte Bunch consisted of one cowboy, "Curly."
His love of the mountain man and cowboy history motivated Deon to encourage the Rotary Club in St. Anthony to erect a monument in honor of Fort Henry. Henry Two Feathers welcomes visitors and residents of St. Anthony to stop in and stay awhile.
He saw potential in everything around him, including the youth he worked with. He was constantly coming up with projects and programs to challenge their skills and abilities. While there, he specialized in delivering the Boy Scout Venturing Program, which he enjoyed so much.
Deon was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was noted for his years of service in the Scouting program and his creative talents in helping to build beautiful floats for the 24th of July parade.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Mathel Roos Davenport and granddaughter, Rose Faith Strate. He is survived by his wife, Diane; his children, Karla Parkinson, Rick Davenport, Amy (John) Marlowe, Angie (Shaun) Jeppesen, Jennie (Clint) Strate and Tara (Josh) Lehmann; and 26-grandchildren. Also surviving Deon are his father, Clair Davenport; brothers and sisters, Ravenna (Henry) Hanft, Mark (Sheri) Davenport, Karen (Randy) Young, Edward (Vicky) Davenport, Eric (Liz) Davenport, Doreen (Brent) Christensen and Paul (Kodi) Davenport.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Parker LDS Church (132 Center Street, Parker.) Friends may call at Bert Flamm Mortuary (581 E. 1st North, St. Anthony) Friday night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Parker Cemetery. I was saddened and shocked to hear about the passing of Deon. I grew up with him and Ravenna, and his mother was one of my great mutual teachers. Deon was always a friend, and a great artist. May you find peace and comfort to your souls at this sad time.

Deon is a great talented man. I have many fond memories of working with him on the stage at Ricks College. He always had a quiet humble confidence that set him apart. I am sorry for your temporary separation from him. It was way too soon.

Deon was my mentor at Rexcraft printing from 1976 to 1978. He was thoughtful, patient and dedicated to his craft. I could talk to Deon about anything; he was always a 'safe place'. So sorry to hear he has left us - and too soon.

Dear Davenport Family,
We were quite surprised to hear of the passing of your good husband and father. Sister Thurgood and I worked quite closely with him a the JCC. He was so helpful to us and our assignment in working with the young people there on behalf of the Church. We appreicate the love he has for everyone, especially those who have a challenge in life. He will be missed, but only for a short time, because we know, as you know, of the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Great Plan of Happiness that He has provided. Deon knows that plan and you will be with him again. We love the Davenport Family. I had the privilege of teaching each of those wonderful children in seminary or religion classes. What a grear family. May the Lord greatly bless and console you at this difficult time.
Love,
Larry and Jean Thurgood

Lowell and I were saddened to see when Deon left this life. We are in Mesquite for the winter and will not be home in time for the funeral. Please know that we are thinking of your family in this difficult time and we are putting our arms around you. I so enjoyed working with Deon at JCC and Lowell was so impressed that he wanted to save some of his old buildings. He will remain in our memory for a long time. Lowell and Mardi Millar-Parkinson

Uncle Deon you will be missed greatly. You were a wonderful man to be around as you were one that always was smiling. I will never forget the time you were there for me at my mothers viewing. You raised wonderful kids and your family will forever continue to grow knowing what a great husband, father, and grandfather you were always.

Aunt Diane, Karla, Ricky, Amy, Angie, Jennie, and Tara, I'm so sorry for the loss of one great and wonderful man. Memories will remain always of Deon as a great person who loved all.
