Ann Todd Hess, 73, of Ashton, a loving mother, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sept. 1, 2013, following an eight year battle with ovarian cancer.
Ann was born in Gridley, Calif., on Nov. 20, 2013, to John Carter Todd and Etta Swan Todd.
Ann was a graduate of Gridley Union High School, Class of 1958. She later graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Family Life. She later finished her elementary education degree by correspondence from Utah State University.
On Oct. 28, 1963, Ann married her lifelong partner and best friend, Eugene Hess Jr., in the Salt Lake City temple. The couple moved back to Eugene's family farm in Ashton, Idaho. Ann traded her California upbringing for million dollar views of the Grand Tetons and rows and rows of potatoes. The change was dramatic. One of the first winters spent in Ashton, Ann was snowed in for a total of 21 days. Eugene always teased that Ann would have walked back to California if she could have got through the snow.
Ann was a lifelong teacher. She was a frequent substitute in Fremont County schools, taught grade school, and worked as the music specialist at Ashton Elementary for 10 years. She also taught piano lessons to many eager students.
Ann's talents and hobbies included music (harp, piano, organ, clarinet, recorder, xylophone, ukulele), art (painting, drawing, crafts), reading mystery novels, sewing, quilting, Siamese cats, traveling and spending time with family.
She served in multiple callings as a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that ranged from Cub Scouts to Relief Society president. She served as the ward organist for many years and was dedicated to arriving early to play prelude music. In recent years, she purposely arranged to have chemotherapy treatments on Mondays so that she would be well enough to attend every Sunday to play the organ. Ann and Eugene also served a senior mission in the Auckland, New Zealand mission for 11 months and spent most of it on the island of Niue.
Ann is survived by her five children, Doug (Marie) Hess, of Ashton, Edward (Robyn) Hess, of Ashton, Von (Nicole) Hess, of Rigby, Elizabeth (Shane) Roos, of West Yellowstone, Mont., and Annette (Jeff) Lynn, of Medford, Ore. She was the proud grandmother of 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was also survived by two sisters and one brother, Anita (Virgil) Valentine, of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Marna (Phil) Eyring, of Moraga, Calif., and Henry (Jan) Todd, of Provo, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, of 46 years, her parents and grandson, Colton Hess.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at the Ashton Tri-Ward LDS Chapel, east of Ashton. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church and Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. also at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Pineview Cemetery under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family at
